Die Spotting Press: Accurate Mould Matching Before Production

Completing the machining of a mould does not necessarily mean that it is ready for production. Before moving into trial or production, the two mould halves need to come together correctly, and their contact condition has to be checked.
This is where die spotting becomes an important stage in the mould-making process. It allows die & mould manufacturers and toolmakers to identify areas that require correction and verify the mould fit before it moves to the next stage. For medium and large moulds, repeated opening, closing and handling can also make this process more demanding.

What Is a Die Spotting Press?

A Die Spotting Press is a machine used during mould matching and finishing to bring the two mould halves together under controlled conditions.
The mould can be positioned on the press, closed for checking, opened for inspection or correction, and brought together again whenever required. This gives the mould-making team a dedicated working setup for carrying out the spotting process instead of repeatedly depending on separate lifting and handling arrangements.
The machine does not manufacture the mould itself. Its role comes after machining, when die & mould manufacturers need to verify how well the two mould halves make contact and whether any further correction or finishing is needed.

Why Mould Matching Needs More Than Visual Inspection

Even when individual mould components are machined accurately, the final condition still needs to be checked when the complete mould is brought together.
Inspecting each mould half separately may not clearly show how the contact areas behave when the mould is closed. By checking the mould in its assembled condition, toolmakers can identify areas where additional correction or finishing may be necessary.
This makes die spotting an important part of mould try-out and finishing, especially when repeated checking is required before the mould is ready to proceed further.

Challenges in Conventional Mould Spotting

When mould spotting is carried out without a dedicated setup, several practical challenges can arise:

  • Repeated mould handling: The mould may need to be opened, closed and repositioned several times during checking and correction.
  • Handling larger moulds: As mould size and weight increase, every additional handling cycle can require more effort.
  • Dependence on lifting arrangements: Repeated movement may require cranes or other supporting handling methods.
  • Multiple correction cycles: Areas requiring finishing may only become clear after the mould is closed and checked, leading to repeated inspection and correction.
  • Managing the workflow: Moving between handling, checking and correction can make the overall spotting process less structured.

Advantages of Using a Die Spotting Press

A dedicated Die Spotting Press brings these activities into one controlled working setup.

  • Controlled mould closing: The mould halves can be brought together under controlled conditions for contact checking.
  • Easier repeated inspection: The mould can be opened for inspection or correction and closed again as required.
  • Reduced dependence on separate handling methods: The spotting process can be carried out without repeatedly shifting the mould between different handling arrangements.
  • Better access during correction: Opening the mould within the dedicated setup makes it easier for the mould-making team to inspect areas that need further work.
  • More structured spotting process: Checking, correction and rechecking can be managed as part of one defined workflow.

For die & mould manufacturers, the value of a spotting press is therefore not simply in handling the mould. It is in bringing greater control and structure to the mould checking and correction process before production begins.
